Running Bamboo
This is the type of Bamboo that gave all Bamboo a bad reputation..
Running bamboos send out long rhizomos or runners several feet away from existing canes and produce an open thicket.
Running Bamboo is also considered to be invasive by some people. Two methods of containing a running bamnoo is to mow the new shoots with the lawnmore or cut a ditch and place 24 inch wide metal. The bamboo roots shallowly and its roots will not dip under the metal. In fact it will hit the metal and the culms will turn up and have more canes. Running bamboo is also easy to control by mowing over new shoots that appear in the Spring. Without the culm being able to grow and develope the it will discontinue putting a culm up in this area. Running Bamboo is the most widely used bamboo in the world.
Lucia's hint. Use a running bamboo in a container as a hedge or screen.
Plant in long narrow plant containers, like a windowbox style.
